Guarding the Garden of Your Heart

Did you know God is a heart God? He truly is. Long before He ever asks for our performance, He's after our heart. That's the message tucked inside Hebrews 10:22 — draw near with a true heart, in full assurance of faith. Not a perfect heart. A true one.
I think of my own story — married young, raised in dysfunction, learning slowly that God wasn't distant or disappointed. He was near the whole time, waiting for me to believe it.
Here's the thing about unbelief: it corrupts the conscience. It makes us doubt what Jesus already finished. And you and I are the only ones who can do anything about that. Nobody else can guard our heart for us.
So many of us grew up without a real sense of direction, no true identity until we met Christ. But He has a way of taking even the wasted years and recovering them. He restores what was lost — not because we earned it back, but because that's who He is.
Jesus taught in Mark 4 about a sower scattering seed. Some seed landed on rocky, shallow ground — no root, no lasting fruit. Some fell among thorns that choked it out. But some fell on good soil and produced a harvest. The difference wasn't the seed. It was the soil. It was the heart.
You are the gardener of your own heart. That's a sobering thought, and also a freeing one. God's Word is the seed; believing prayer is the water. If you give that seed a good place to grow — free from the weeds of offense, unbelief, and self-effort — it will flourish.
Paul told the Colossians that in Christ are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. Not locked away from us — hidden for us, waiting to be discovered. It's a treasure hunt! And the moment you realize it's a Person you're searching for, not a system, everything changes. Following rules can feel like duty. Knowing Jesus feels like life.
So today, ask yourself: what's the condition of the soil in my heart? Is it hardened by disappointment, or is it soft and open toward Him? You get to choose. Meditate on His Word. Protect what's been planted. Don't let the cares of this life choke it out before it has a chance to grow roots.
Jesus said, "Come to Me, all who are weary, and I will give you rest." Not more striving. Rest. That's the invitation extended to your heart today — to lay down the performance and simply receive.
God is a Heart-God. And He's after yours.
