Biblical Clarity on Israel

Understanding Modern Israel Through the Lens of Scripture

Starting in Genesis

Let’s begin with a commonly quoted passage: Genesis 12:3. Often used to defend support for the modern nation of Israel, this verse actually predates the formation of the nation. It refers specifically to Abraham and his physical seed, which later became Israel.

But Abraham fathered two nations:

  • A physical nation—Israel, through Isaac and Jacob

  • A spiritual nation—those who believe in Jesus, by faith (see Galatians 3)

The Prophetic Promise: Genesis 12:2–3

  1. Verse 2 promises Abraham a great (singular) nation.

  2. Verse 3 follows by declaring, “I will bless those who bless you... and all the families of the earth will be blessed through you.”

That global blessing came through Jesus the Messiah, Abraham’s descendant.

Is the Modern Nation of Israel Biblical Israel?

This is the big question. Many evangelicals support Israel, but few can explain the theological reason why. Let’s explore it.

What Does Genesis Say?

God made an everlasting covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob concerning the land (Genesis 17:7–8, 26:3–4, 48:4). That promise was never revoked. It remains in place today.

Prophetic Fulfillment: Israel's Restoration

There are dozens of prophecies about the return of Jewish people to their ancestral land:

  • Ezekiel 36:24: “I will take you from the nations and gather you... into your own land.”

  • Amos 9:14–15, Ezekiel 37:21–22, and Jeremiah 16:14–15 all foretell this regathering.

Modern Fulfillment?

Over one million Jews returned to Israel from the former Soviet Union between 1991–2000. This aligns with biblical prophecy and is nothing short of miraculous.

Despite centuries of being conquered and scattered, the Jewish people retained their identity, language, and faith—a historical anomaly without parallel. As W.S. Campbell said, “It would be naive to suggest that it is merely an accident of history…”

New Testament Insight: Israel’s Future

Romans 11 makes it clear: ethnic Israel has a prophetic future.

  • Verse 25: Israel is temporarily blinded.

  • Verse 26: “All Israel will be saved.”

  • Verse 29: God's call on Israel is irrevocable—not based on righteousness, but God’s faithfulness.

Do We Have to Support Israel’s Politics?

Not necessarily. You honor the God of Israel, not every decision of her politicians.

Jeremiah 31:35–37 declares that God will never reject Israel as long as the sun and moon shine. If God rejected people for bad behavior, the Church itself would be in trouble.

Jesus Is Still Jewish

Jesus was born a Jew, lived as a Jew, and remains identified with Israel:

  • Romans 1:3: Jesus is “the seed of David.”

  • Revelation 5:5: He is the “Lion of the Tribe of Judah.”

  • Zechariah 14:3–4 & Acts 1:9–11: He will return to the Mount of Olives, just as He left.

Israel’s Leaders Aren’t Perfect—And Never Were

Some question Israel’s legitimacy because of leaders like Netanyahu. But biblical Israel had far worse—Ahab, Jezebel, Manasseh—and yet God remained faithful to His covenant.

The Reconciliation of Jesus and His People

In Matthew 23:39, Jesus tells Jerusalem He won’t return until they welcome Him as Messiah. This mirrors the story of Joseph, who was rejected by his brothers, became a savior to the nations, and later reconciled with his family. Jesus is following the same pattern.

This Is No Coincidence

The rebirth of Israel in 1948 was not a political accident—it was prophetic fulfillment. Consider:

  • No other nation has returned to its land after 2,000 years of exile.

  • Jews are less than 0.2% of the world population but have won 15% of Nobel Prizes.

  • Isaiah 35:1 is fulfilled as Israel exports roses from the desert.

  • The Six-Day War was a miraculous military victory.

Why Should Believers Bless Israel?

Here are 9 Biblical reasons:

  1. The Bible came through Israel—every book was written by Jews (likely including Luke).

  2. Jesus came through Israel (Matthew 1:1).

  3. The gospel went to Gentiles because of Israel’s temporary blindness (Romans 11:11–12).

  4. Jewish apostles spread the gospel across Europe and Asia.

  5. Romans 15:25–27 teaches Gentiles owe a material debt to Israel.

  6. Jesus is returning to Israel—specifically, the Mount of Olives.

  7. Jewish prayers and faith brought the Messiah into the world (Luke 2:25–38).

  8. The Bible commands us to pray for Jerusalem (Psalm 122:6) and be watchmen on her walls (Isaiah 62:6–7).

  9. God blesses those who bless Abraham’s seed (Genesis 12:3). History shows nations that bless Israel are elevated, and those who curse her decline.

Final Thoughts: You're Smarter Than That

To dismiss the modern State of Israel as coincidence is intellectually dishonest. It is a fulfillment of prophecy and a testimony to God’s covenantal faithfulness.

Jesus is returning to Jerusalem. The Jewish people are awakening. And the Church is called to pray, support, and bless Israel—not blindly, but biblically.
