Embracing Our Roots

Writer's picture: Denise CapraDenise Capra

I believe we are all about to experience a rapid metamorphosis in our surroundings and a transition in government administrations. Be a part of the reformation—be prayerful and active.

Many balk at the idea of "the church" engaging in politics. But consider our origins. Did you know that the original colonists were about 90% Protestant?

Delaware, the first state to ratify the U.S. Constitution, included this statement:"Every person... appointed to any office... shall... subscribe... 'I profess faith in God the Father and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, and in the Holy Ghost, one God, blessed forevermore; and I do acknowledge the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testament to be given by Divine inspiration.'"

Pennsylvania, the second state to ratify, stated in its 1776 Constitution, signed by Ben Franklin:"Each member, before he takes his seat, shall... subscribe... 'I do believe in one God, the Creator and Governor of the universe, the Rewarder of the good and the Punisher of the wicked. And I do acknowledge the Scriptures of the Old and New Testament to be given by Divine inspiration.'"

New Jersey, the third state to ratify, declared:"All persons professing a belief in the faith of any Protestant sect, who shall demean themselves peaceably under the government... shall be capable of being elected."

Georgia, the fourth state to ratify, included this in its state constitution:"Representatives shall be chosen out of the residence in each county, and they shall be of the Protestant religion."

And I could continue with quotes from 10 other states connecting us to our simple faith in God! (As noted in Silence is Consent by William Federer.) Clearly, it is time to fully embrace our roots.

In America, nationalism means preserving a nation where individuals have worth, regardless of the group to which they belong. People have worth because they are made in the image of the Creator, who is not a respecter of persons. Therefore, all are equal before the law.

The word “citizen” originates from the Greek word meaning co-sovereign, co-ruler, or co-king. In America, each citizen is a co-ruler. Government derives its authority from the consent of the governed, with the purpose of guaranteeing Creator-given rights to every individual.

Christian separatist Pilgrims fled the top-down supremacy, dominionism, and the theocracy of a king to give birth to America's bottom-up representative Republic—a covenant plan of government based on the consent of the governed.

Nationalism in America champions individual liberty. In socialist countries, nationalism props up totalitarian regimes that deny individual rights. The meaning of nationalism varies between nations, but in America, it supports a government rooted in the consent of the governed, guaranteeing citizens God-given rights, including freedom of conscience, religion, and the ability to determine their own destiny.

What we now call nationalism was once simply called patriotism!
